Three days ago one of our people went quiet in a river city. Before the line closed, we intercepted a single message from the courier we believe responsible. It was encrypted quickly, and badly. The haste is what interests me. People only rush a cipher when someone is paying them to be somewhere else.

The encryption is a Caesar shift, the kind taught to first-year clerks. The key was never transmitted. But the courier signs their traffic TRIDENT, and vanity is its own kind of carelessness. Count the points.
